There is growing importance of regional integration and co-operation in Africa, as evidenced by a number of initiatives such regional trade agreements and regional peace and security efforts. Given that many African countries are small and that economies of scale can be derived from joint initiatives, the merits of such a collective approach to development cannot be understated. Regional public goods can help countries to be more cost-efficient in the delivery of public services, and compete at the global level by achieving sufficient economies of scale.
