Between 20 and 40 percent of health spending is wasted globally through inefficiency, according to the World Health Organization’s 2010 World Health Report. This policy brief on financing healthcare in Africa is based on a recent policy dialogue that CABRI hosted for budget and health policy officials, which discussed key inefficiencies in health spending, as well as approaches and tools with which to identify and address the inefficiencies in the health system. The policy dialogue focused mainly on the inefficiencies in the use of medicine, human resources and health services. This briefing paper also focuses on the need for health and finance officials to work together effectively to improve value for money in health services.
