Since the COVID-19 pandemic, debt levels in Africa have increased sharply as a result of record levels of debt issuances. Borrowing requirements will remain high, coupled with emergency spending pressures and lower revenue collections. As a result, the risks in the debt portfolio will continue to increase, with shorter debt issued and yield curves remaining steep. More countries in Africa are now facing unsustainable debt levels. The peer-exchange forum presented an opportunity to share early lessons and experiences on how debt managers have responded to the pandemic. A selected group of public debt managers provided country responses to start, followed by an open exchange among peers.
